Opening Session -- February 13, 2003
Representatives from the business, service, political and academic communities will introduce this year's program. Opportunities and the resource needs of the community will be the focus of this first session. Alumni from the Leadership Institute will share their experience with the new class. This first session will explore expectations for the Institute and begin the process of creating networks among the participants.

Using
David Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI), participants will explore their
personal problem-solving style and those of others, and learn why involving
a combinationof styles generates success in working groups and teams.

Session 3 -- The Challenge and Value of Team-Based Decision Making -- February 27, 2003
Effective teams are essential for solving problems, making high quality decisions and taking action in organizations. Building on Learning Styles from the previous session, the key ingredients for successful teamwork, and a demonstration of the power of synergy and people working together to establish consensus will comprise the elements of this working session.

Leaders
are most effective when their style of leadership recognizes and responds to
the needs and expectations of the followers. In this session, participants
assess their own leadership style, and work on strategies for increasing their
effectiveness as leaders.

Session 5 -- Leadership & Change -- March 13 2003
Leading
change is one of the most significant challenges confronting organizations.
In this session, participants use a case study format to gain a clearer understanding
of the essentials of effective organizational change.

for Not-For-Profit Organizations
The
success of effective marketing and fundraising in the not-for-profit sector
is crucial to the efficacy of the community organization. The most important
attributes of Board Members will be discussed, understanding why people give
or don't give, and planning the annual fund campaign will be featured components
of this session.

The
long-term survival of organizations increasingly depends on the ability of their
leaders to think and plan strategically. In this session, participants
will practice developing mission statements, defining strategic goals and practicing
the kind of strategic thinking that is essential for organizational development.

Closing Banquet: April 8, 2003
The
closing banquet recognizes the graduates of the Leadership Institute 2002.
Participants invite their sponsors and other significant others to attend the
ceremony and dinner held at the Colony Club in Springfield.
Beacon Hill Summit: Date to Be Announced
This
annual full-day trip to the State House in Boston will allow participants a
first hand view on how government can work for you. Special sessions for
Leadership students will focus on how a bill becomes law and the fine points
of lobbying. Everyone will participate in panel discussions with Administration
official. Coffee with officials will begin the day. Luncheon with
our area legislators and a wrap-up cocktail party add to this special event
