This course will explore in detail the causes, course and consequences of the war which shaped the nature of 20th century history. In a sense, the period between the two world wars was merely a long armistice or a pause in the great 20th century "civil war." This was the war that resulted in the first successful Communist Revolution and the collapse of three great empires, the German, the Russian and the Austro-Hungarian. Nothing was ever quite the same again in Europe and the rest of the world.
